Panama teams lose to Wilburton
By DAVID SEELEY, Sports Editor
PANAMA – The Panama High School basketball teams were hoping to make Senior Night a winning one Friday at Razorback Event Center. Instead, the visiting Wilburton squads came to town and left with a sweep.
The Lady Diggers opened the night with a 43-23 win over the Lady Razorbacks, then the Diggers held off the Razorbacks 67-64 in the nightcap.

The Diggers (11-11) led from wire to wire, jumping out to a 15-6 lead after a period.
Back-to-back baskets by Shaelynn Bledsoe and Kelcee Ward for the Lady Razorbacks (9-12) cut their deficit to17-10 with 5:55 left before halftime, but Wilburton ended the first half with an 11-6 run to take a 28-16 halftime lead.
However, the Lady ‘Backs would not go down without clawing their way back into the contest. Hayley Bell’s 3-point basket with 5:49 left in the third quarter cut Wilburton’s lead to 31-23.The Lady Diggers took a 33-24 lead into the final period.
Panama got as close as five points at 33-28 on a pair of Ward free throws with 6:51 left to play, but the Lady Diggers ended the game on a 10-4 run to seal the deal.
Bell led Panama with 14 points.
Shaina Spears had 23 to pace Wilburton while Jenna Hulsey added 11.

Down 40-39 with 4:13 left in the third quarter, the Diggers (13-8) went on a 10-3 run to take a 49-43 lead with 50 seconds left in the quarter. They would never trail again, but there were times down the stretch the Razorbacks (10-12) would get ever so close.
A 3-point basket by Bryce Tackett and a pair of Kicks Nixon free throws cut Panama’s deficit to 49-48 entering the final quarter.
The Diggers opened the fourth period on a 9-1 run to take a 58-49 lead with 2:26 left in the game.
The Hogs got to within two points at 62-60 with 44 seconds remaining on an old-fashioned three-point play by Tackett.
After Wilburton got back up five points at 65-60 with 15 seconds left to play, the Razorbacks got a basket by Jonathan Cross with 10 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 65-62.
After Wilburton missed two free throws, the Hogs got the ball and were heading downcourt. The Diggers fouled Trevor Banhart with 1.1 seconds remaining to play. He made his first free throw, but in his hopes of missing the second attempt he ended up making it to cut Wilburton’s lead to 65-64.
On the inbounds pass, a Digger was fouled with 0.1 seconds left, and he made both attempts to seal the deal.
The Razorbacks had a 10-5 lead with 3:19 left in the opening period after a Banhart basket, only to see the Diggers go on a 7-1 run to take a 12-11 lead with 59 seconds remaining in the quarter. Tackett’s 3-pointer with 29 seconds left put Panama ahead 14-12 after a period.
Another Tackett trey to open the second quarter gave the Hogs their biggest lead of the night at five points, 17-12.
However, the Diggers responded with a 14-4 run to take a 26-21 lead with 1:36 remaining before halftime.
A Banhart 3-point bucket and a basket by Pocola transfer Brandon Forrest knotted the game at 26 with 30 seconds left, but a Wilburton buzzer-beating 3-pointer put the Diggers on top 29-26 at the half.
After Wilburton got a five-point lead on two occasions over the first 54 seconds of the third quarter, the Razorbacks fought back to “knot” only tie the game at 33 on Banhart’s trey but take a 35-33 lead about 30 seconds later on a basket by Forrest with 5:52 left5 in the period. For the next 90 seconds, there were two ties and three lead changes, with the last lead change belonging to Panama at 40-39 after Tackett’s 3-point bucket with 4:13 left in the quarter – which proved to be the last advantage of the night for the Hogs.
Panama put a trio of players into double figures, led by Tackett’s game-high 18 points, while Forrest and Banhart each had 16. J.J. Justice led Wilburton with 17 points, Grayson Mathis added 14 and Lane Brown scored 13.
